​What is a Process Addiction (Behavioural Addiction)?

Lots of people suffer from process addictions (behavioural addictions), they are not at all uncommon and they can often go on for sustained periods of time whilst undetected or unrevealed. They can also have just as damaging an effect on a persons life, and the lives of those people close to them, as addictions to substances does. “Process Addiction” covers a wide range of different addictions associated with behaviours, including those listed above, where the principles of addiction is the same but no actual substance is involved. The brain releases similar chemicals as when a substance is used so it is has the same effect on the mood as a substance addiction. That effect leads to the person seeking out more and more of this 'pleasurable' or seemingly enjoyable behaviour despite any of the negative consequences. 

Some aspects of Eating Disorders (food addiction) as well as Gambling Addiction, Sex Addiction, Love Addiction, Pornography Addiction, Gaming Addiction and Spending Addiction are all examples of Process Addictions. This type of addiction can often manifest in a persons life in many different and overwhelming ways and sometimes sits alongside an addiction to alcohol or other drugs.

There are also other less common ones but these are the main ones that crop up regularly and are the most easily identified.
