Extended Care (Continued Care) Rehab Aftercare.
Where do you go after rehab?
The question of where should a person go after detox and primary rehab comes up a lot at Rehab Cape Town with CapeRecovery. Personally, I believe that this is the most important time in recovery as we put into action all that we have learnt and it is important not to rush the transition period as getting things right at this stage can set the benchmark for a long lasting and happy, continued recovery. At Rehab Cape Town with CapeRecovery we have extended care options that are specially chosen for people recovering from all addictions, process addictions, dual-diagnosis issues and eating disorders and we provide whatever level of support is required. Many rehabs do offer rehab aftercare but only one session, once a week and attendance tends to be quite low, obviously the individuals motivation is the most important factor here. My view from my own experience as a nurse and counsellor in the addiction field in the UK and from personal experience of a crippling 25 year addiction to alcohol and other drugs, is that the addiction usually took a substantial period of time to reach crisis point, so a full recovery simply isn’t feasible in a period of 21 days or a month. Whenever it is possible, and actually saving on money in the future, my opinion is that some sort of extended care or continued care is vital. We often find people coming to us for some true, impartial advice about the next step of their own, or a loved ones, recovery journey. There is a worrying tendency, as medical aid only recognises and pays for primary rehab treatment or even just the detox period, for many clients to leave without any proper guidance or follow up. Again, in my opinion, this is simply setting people up to fail. This is of course, an advantage to the primary rehab centres as they get repeat custom but doesn’t seem at all ethical to me as it puts lives at risk. Repeated trips to rehab are unfortunately a common occurrence, however the chance of this can easily be lessoned by putting a follow up plan in place and continuing the journey with a period at a good quality secondary rehab, tertiary rehab or a stay in sober living accommodation. Even if this is not financially possible, as is often the case, we can at least advise on meetings to attend and things to do in order to keep working on the individuals recovery and prevent relapse. We are also working hard to make sober living more affordable and always seeking funding for sponsored and part-sponsored beds in our remarkable sober living homes.
